It had been about an hour since Pokey went upstairs to rest. He was woken up by his mother coming upstairs with some soup. She stopped at the doorway, and placed the bowl on a table near the entrance to the room. Picky had just come home from school, and he was rambling on about something Ness was doing. Lardna sighed, then head downstairs towards the living room.
“Mom, I saw Ness wandering around Onett. His teacher says he was home sick, but I saw him outside at lunch!”
Lardna stopped at the kitchen, “… That’s nice. and I suppose he’ll just get away with it.”
“Well… The teachers don’t know what’s going on. I heard Tracy talking to her mom before I got home. She was talking about holding things for him.” Picky explained as he put his backpack beside the couch in the living room.
“Whatever it is, I’m sure he’s up to no good.” Lardna mumbled, as she took out the plates for dinner.
Picky ran upstairs to see how his brother was doing. Pokey was still in bed, sitting up with his arms crossed. Picky took the bowl of soup over to him,
“Did you hear me dowstairs?” he asked.
“Yeah, I heard you…” Pokey said to his brother, uncaring, as he took the bowl of soup from Picky.
He held the bowl in his hands, and stared at it for a while,
“Maybe that bee-thing was right…” he said.
Picky stood next to the bed, “About Ness being a hero, and stuff?”
Pokey grabbed the spoon and started eating the soup. Picky shrugged, and started to head back downstairs when he was interrupted by Pokey,
“Hey, I’m not that hungry, you should take this back to mom…”
Picky turned around, shocked by what his brother just said, “Uh… OK.”
He went back and took the bowl from Pokey, then headed downstairs to the kitchen to clear it. Pokey could hear his brother telling their mom what he had said. She sounded worried, but it was always hard to tell for sure.
Pokey went back to sleep, but only for a little bit as his father came home in a bad mood as always. He yelled at Picky to do his homework, and to shut off the T.V.
“Dinner’ll be ready in about 30 minutes.” Lardna said, used to Aloysius’ temper.
It was quiet for a few minutes, then Pokey heard footsteps coming upstairs. It was his dad, who stopped at the entranceway to give him another lecture,
“You need to start trying better in school! When I was your age I went to class when I had the flu…”
Pokey looked away, and waited for him to go back downstairs. He sighed, and listened to his father complain about him to Lardna. He could hear the dinner table being set, then slowly fell back to sleep.
